How To Get The Best Clothing & Accessory Deals

If you enjoy shopping with your girlfriends while sipping on some coffee or shopping while in your comfy pajamas on the couch, this post is for you--If you love a great deal while shopping, then you won't want to skip a word!

Maybe it's the "thrill of the hunt", but my preferred way to score those designer handbags, dresses and shoes (even jewelry) is on consignment or by thrift store hopping. You will also see me in the big box stores in the "clearance" section and also supporting my girlfriends who sell amazing high quality clothing and accessories at affordable prices online.  Most of these women are your neighbors, coworkers, children’s teachers, etc.

But how do you know you're getting authentic good quality (even luxury items) at the very best price? Read on....

First, you might enjoy a little "thrifting trivia". The word "THRIFT" originated from the word "THRIVE"--(No wonder I like it so much!) Here's a quick and very interesting timeline for you:

  • 1820 Charity shops begin to open doors in America with second-hand items
  • 1919 The term "thrift shop" is coined
  • 1929-1941 During The Great Depression, Goodwill opened 100 stores
  • 1990-1993 With the invention of the internet, eBay was founded
  • 2007-2009 With The Great Recession, thrift stores saw a 35% sales increase
  • 2008 Angelina Jolie wears a $26 thrifted dress on the red carpet
  • 2009-2011 ThredUp, Poshmark, and The RealReal was founded
  • 2016 Apparel resale grew to a $18 billion industry (both online and offline)
  • By 2021 the resale industry is projected to be at $33 billion

If you're still with me and on board with getting all the goods at the best price possible, you will love my YouTube video where I take you along with me to several of my favorite spots and show you what to look for both offline and online. Do you know how to tell a real designer handbag from a fake? You'll learn in my video!

Next, let's establish why financially scouting out these deals is desirable (I'll address other areas of reasoning with you in a bit--hang in there with me, it will be worth it). Take for instance 4 of the most popular accessory items in the "SHOP HERE, NOT THERE" scenario images below and see the comparison for yourself (I think you'll find the look of the items are very similar to each other).
The discount version of these red mules can be found here

The discount version of the rancher hat can be found here and comes with a coupon code

The discount version of these cute sunnies can be found here

The discount version of this Chanel watch can be found here (at the time of posting this was out of stock--hopefully it will restock soon but plenty of other similar choices--a testimony to high quality items go FAST at great prices!)

Now, I will show you a couple of my favorite finds over the last couple years. I'm showing you/explaining each image so you'll know how to seek out deals like this too. You'll hear me explain in the video that I have a certain strategy for building a wardrobe online and offline that I hope you'll find helpful.

These two images show a blouse and sleeve detail (I love small interesting details that make something extra special, don't you!?) of a Brooks Brothers Non-iron ruffle pinpoint 100% cotton oxford dress shirt that retails at $118. I purchased at the outlet clearance section for around $50 for a special occasion

In my video, you'll learn how to tell if your designer bag is genuine. This is the exact bag I found on one of my thrifting trips I take you on in the video. You'll notice this Coach bag in pristine condition was purchased at Goodwill for $24.99. It is a Coach Legacy Hobo (mine was made in 2013 and MSRP $298). You can see a similar one on eBay here for a much higher price than what I paid at Goodwill.

I scored this 100% silk Parker NY dress with the tags still on for TONS off the original price tag on MY ABSOLUTE favorite new place to shop online. The RealReal is a sustainable luxury company that specializes in authenticating luxury consignment. Look for their 20% off code REAL and
25% off special for new shoppers if you shop with them. You'll see this beauty in action as I do an unboxing on my YouTube video and share the important details you must know when shopping with The RealReal online

These Kate Spade NY sequin bow flats are also a find from The RealReal The website (or app) will tell you the condition of the items and these were hardly worn with no visible signs on the soles or the insoles. The sequins were secure and none missing. This is why I like this sight for shopping online--they go through a vigorous curated process. I like this company so much, that I linked them for you on my SOME OF MY FAVORITE THINGS LIST under AUTHENTICATED LUXURY CONSIGNMENT in the sidebar on my blog
